Wet track conditions forced cancellation of Friday’s qualifying round for Saturday’s Sprint Showdown race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

NASCAR announced cancellation of the round at 9:05 p.m. Friday after a strong early-evening shower had drenched the track.

Twenty-five of 29 drivers had made qualifying runs before rain stopped the session, but, since the round was not completed, the field was set using the qualifying draw order, not the track speeds.

Thus, David Ragan will start on the pole for Saturday night’s race, which is the preliminary to the annual Sprint All-Star Race. Starting behind Ragan will be Max Papis and Sam Hornish Jr.

Juan Pablo Montoya had the fastest car in the abbreviated session. He turned a lap at 188.055 miles per hour. Following were Jeff Burton, Martin Truex Jr., Paul Menard and Marcos Ambrose.

Remaining to make qualifying runs when the rain started were Carl Edwards, Tony Raines, Derrike Cope and David Gilliland.

The first two finishers in the 40-lap Showdown will advance to the Sprint All-Star Race.
