Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team avenged a semifinal defeat from last year as they held off the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing crew of driver Jeff Burton to win Wednesday night’s Sprint Pit Crew Challenge at Bobcats Arena in Charlotte.

The opening competitive event for the Sprint All-Star Race week featured 24 teams vying for the more than $70,000 first prize in team owners as well as a series of individual competitions. The timed event required teams to jack a car, change four tires, fill a car with gas and then push their car 40 yards. In the finals, the JGR squad won by a margin of 23.132 seconds to 23.574 seconds for Burton’s crew.

It was a long evening of intense competition for NASCAR’s top pit crews.

In the opening round, Bobby Labonte’s No. 71 TRG Motorsports crew bested the No. 2 Penske Racing squad of driver Kurt Busch by 28.284 seconds vs. a losing 30.972, which included 8 seconds in penalties.

The No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports team then thrilled the Earnhardt Nation by getting Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car to the finish line ahead of the No. 1 of Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray and his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates entry. The No. 88 team had the fastest time of the round at 22.930 seconds to 24.512 seconds for McMurray’s crew.

The third pair saw the No. 39 of Ryan Newman and Stewart-Haas Racing team reach the finish line literally inches ahead of David Reutimann’s No. 00 from Michael Waltrip Racing. The margin was just 23.860 seconds to 23.885 seconds in the closest match of the round.

In the last battle at the bottom half of the bracket, the 2008 championship team of Red Bull Racing’s No. 83 bested Martin Truex Jr.’s No. 56 MWR team. The Red Bull team had the second-best time of the round, 23.003 seconds to the 56’s 33.096.
